SPORTS TRIVIA CHALLENGE 04/14/98: Linking back up

By Mike Emmett

From the Trivial Sayings In Golf Department: Jack Nicklaus said a year ago that Tiger Woods "played a game that I am not familiar with." Everyone jumped on that soundbite as if it was truly the most unique thing they ever heard of.

But the fact is, that was not an original from the Golden Bear. Seems the legendary Bobby Jones first said almost the very same thing when he watched a young Jack Nicklaus chew up the courses in the 1960s.

In this case, Jones' assessment was probably more accurate since the Golden Bear beat the Golden Heir at Augusta in 1998 by two shots.

  • All weekend long at the Masters, we kept hearing how Mark O'Meara was one of the game's best golfers but he never won a major tournament. Well, that's not exactly true.

O'Meara, you see, won a major in 1979. He was victorious in the U.S. Amateur when he played for Long Beach State. To win the title, he beat a kid out of Ohio State named John Cook.

And as well all know, the U.S. Amateur is certainly one of the major tournaments a golfer aspires to win during his career.

  • Speaking of Ohio State, Cook was the third Buckeye to come out of Columbus and achieve big-time success on the PGA Tour.

The other two? Jack Nicklaus, of course, and a fellow named Tom Weiskopf.

  • True story: Back around 1980, yours truly was playing a round of golf at the Ohio State Gray Course with a colleague from the Columbus Citizen-Journal. My game, I must admit, was not as refined as I had hoped it would be this day. So, it was one of those "good shot, bad shot" rounds.

On one of the holes, I hooked a tee shot across the trees and into a fairway on the adjoining Scarlet Course. I saw a golfer over there standing in the path of my oncoming Titleist, so I promptly yelled the obligatory, "Fore!"

I went after my ball, making sure to walk down that fairway so I could apologize to the other golfer, who had to scoot fast to miss being hit.

I came up to him and said, "Sorry, that one just got away."

The guy said no problem and that those things happen. His name? It was Weiskopf out for a practice round at his home course.

  • Did you know that even a so-so golfer can hit a Top Flite much farther than Ken Griffey Jr. or Mark McGwire can hit a baseball? Think about it: A 510-foot homer is only a 170-yard drive. That's an 8-iron in my book.

WEBVIEWER MAIL: Got a trivia question that you think will stump the ol' Irishman -- or a gripe about sports or some particular incident -- just email me and I will try to include it in my next column. All ya gotta do is click here.

Hey Irishdude, where the heck have you been?
From a Billy the Kidder in the great state of Ohio, who's sprung his mindspring.com
Hiya, Billy. As Jack Nicholson in "The Shining" said: "Been away, but now I am back!" Actually, we have been rather tied up this year with projects at our day job, and then trying to redesign our LiteSports.com site, plus launch a new effort for an online store. It will still be a while before we can get this column back to weekly, but for now, we are starting back with a biweekly plan.

Did Willie Mays ever win the Triple Crown?
From Ray who is relaxing at his Rest.com address.
No. Last National Leaguer to win the Triple was Joe Medwick in 1937. Last player in both to win was Yaz in 1967. Since the 1950s, only Yaz, Frank Robinson and Mantle won the Triple Crown.

So, how many games do you think we will win this year?
From John Cooper at a Buckeyebust.com.
Well, if Earle Bruce can go 8-3 every year, there's reason you cannot do the same, Johnny. But to tell you the truth, I see a big letdown coming OSU's way soon. Better keep those boys on the field and out of the courts is all I gotta say.

TEST TIME: Can't resist -- time for some Masterful trivia from 1996:

    1) Greg Norman crashed and burned in the 1996 Masters when he blew a six-shot lead. Who eventually won that tournament? Give up?

    2) And what did the Shark shoot in the final round at that 1996 Masters? Give up?

    3) In the very same year, 1996, who won the inaugural season-opener -- The Mercedes Championship? Give up?

    4) Of the golfers who finished in the Top 10 in the 1996, who was the only one to really challenge at the 1998 event? Give up?

    5) How many other PGA Tour events did Nick Faldo win in 1996 in addition to the Masters? Give up?
